Initial Physiotherapy Assessment
A structured first physiotherapy consultation combining history, objective assessment, clinical reasoning and a clear next-step plan.
Start with a proper assessment so the next step is based on your presentation—not on guesswork.
Who this is for
Choose this first if pain, injury or functional limitation means you are unsure whether you need physiotherapy, exercise rehabilitation, medical referral or a return-to-training plan.
Professional approach
Physiotherapy uses examination/assessment, evaluation and clinical reasoning to identify impairments, activity limitations and functional priorities. The service is assessment-led: treatment is selected only after the presentation has been evaluated rather than applying a generic modality to every client.
What to expect
The appointment begins with a subjective history covering symptom behaviour, mechanism/onset, relevant medical history and functional limitations. The physiotherapist then performs an objective examination appropriate to the presentation, which may include range of motion, strength, movement/function tests and other clinically indicated measures. Findings are explained and used to formulate the physiotherapy plan, self-management advice or referral pathway.
Your professional team
Delivered by, or under the direction and supervision of, an appropriately qualified physiotherapy professional, subject to practitioner availability.
Professional & safety notes
Urgent/red-flag symptoms, suspected fracture, acute neurological signs, severe systemic symptoms or other presentations outside outpatient physiotherapy scope require appropriate medical referral. The exact examination depends on the individual presentation.
